Ranikhet means literally Queen?s Field, due to a popular belief that this spot had won the heart of Rani Padmini, Queen of Raja Sudhardev. She chose this scenic spot to be her abode.
The charming hill station lies at a height of 1829 m above sea level and invites all city dwellers in need for relax to take a deep breath in midst its amazing nature. Ranikhet represents the best the heavenly nature of the Himalayas. It invites all travellers to admire the beautiful valleys with their crystal clear brooks, serpentine rivers, majestic pine trees, flowers, green meadows and, of course, the snow capped mountains. The dwarf rhododendron bushes in bloom are a gift from Mother Nature and will delight the visitor?s senses with their colour shades and fragrances. Any season is special and beautiful by itself and will have an unforgettable impact on the visitor. This is what it really makes an all season destination. It attracts thousands of people every year. They come to witness the incredible beauty of the flora and fauna, participate in exciting treks, visit ancient temples or just enjoy a picnic in the picturesque landscape.
The place was selected by the British in 1869 as a hill station to escape the heat of the Indian summers and they established the headquarters of the Kumaon Regiment here. Today it is the home for the Kumaon Regimental Centre & Naga Regiment, maintained by the Indian Army.
