The Bhimtal Lake is the largest in the district centred admits green mountains. It measures 1.701 m by 454 m and is longer than the Naini Lake. The spot is situated at 1.371 m above sea level at 22 km from Nainital. Bhimtal offers splendid views and visual vistas of nature?s beauty. The climate is pleasant and wholesome during summers, but very cold during winters. Once it was part of the ancient silk route and is therefore older than Nainital city. Bhimtal lies now on the trek to Kathling Glacier and invites trekkers to relax and refresh.
The place is named after the Pandava brothers in association with Bhima of the Mahabharata. The ancient Bhimeshwara Mahadev temple lies on the bank of the lake. Near the temple is the small hill called Garg Parvat, which is the source of the river Gargi. Another attraction nearby is the Nal Damyanti Tal, a small natural lake about 2 km from Bhimtal. The hill of Karkotaka, named after Karkotaka a mystical cobra, is famous for its Nag temple.
There is a small island in the centre of the lake, only 91 m away from the shore. An aquarium has been built on this island by the Nainital Lake Development Authority, where a variety of fishes from countries like Mexico, China and South Africa can be admired. Visitors who get into aquatic sport will enjoy the facilities of paddling and boating around the lake.
